Screening for PTSD and functional impairment in trauma-exposed young children: evaluation of alternative CBCL-PTSD subscales

Abstract The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL 1.5–5 years) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) subscale by Dehon & Scheeringa (2006) as a screener for PTSD in trauma-exposed young children has yielded inconsistent results so far. Therefore, the aim of this study was to create and examine validity alternative CBCL-PTSD subscales compare them existing based on DSM-5 diagnostic criteria 6 years younger. Further, were examined regarding their usefulness screening stress-related functional impairment. sample comprised 116 ( M age = 3.42 years, SD 1.21 female 49.1%). psychometric properties well expert rating CBCL-PTSD-17 ) variable importance CBCL-PTSD-6 evaluated means receiver operating characteristic curves, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values, negative values. Area under curves all three investigated good excellent showed high sensitivity Considering length performance subscales, appears be promising clinically useful impairment due easiest most practicable application. For purposes discriminant validation CBCL-PTSD-6, without history trauma should compared with history.
